Remember The Titans
Students as a class are to watch 40 minutes of the movie 'Remember the Titans'. The students will be given a worksheet to complete throughout the movie or afterwards. The section of the movie that will be shown is when two schools (African-American and White-Caucasian) are closed and the students are forced to attend one school together. The film then proceeds to follow the school football team and begins to show discrimination issues and segregation. Through the work of the coach and a team camp he is able to unite the team as one, thus uniting the school as one.
Activity 1 Questions:
1. In one paragraph, outline the basic story line of 'Remember the Titans' from what you watched.
2. Why is there discrimination in the movie and what different forms of discrimination are there?
3. List the social factors which influenced the development and occurrence of discrimination?
4. Identify three strategies used by Coach Boone (Denzel Washington) to overcome the discrimination. Evaluate their appropriateness and effectiveness.
5. Assess the importance of characters in the film that resist the social pressure to discriminate. Examine the conflicts they face and how they overcome them. (Half Page Answer)
Anti-Discrimination Act
Students are to read through the Discrimination Act in groups of three and are required to list any breaches of the Discrimination Act in the movie. When this is completed the students are to list any forms of Discrimination they have experienced or witnessed in their community and propose an action plan to reduce or solve this discrimination issue. When completed the students have to present their action plan to the class.
Reason For Inclusion:
These tasks are designed to raise awareness of discrimination in schools and communities and the effects that it can have on individuals. Students use current and acquired knowledge on Discrimination to assist in answering the questions about the movie. Their knowledge is then built through the Anti-Discrimination Act activity and the students communicating together to identify any discrimination in their community, finally their able to show their thoughts to the class through the use of an action plan.
Through the proposal of these action plans the students may be more aware of their actions and the effects they can have on other people. This may help in decreasing the incidences of Discrimination in their communities and throughout their lives.
